What Is 317L– UNS S31703, 1.4438 Stainless Steel Angle ?

Stainless Steel 317L Angle SuppliersASTM A276: Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes such as Angle, tees, and channels

317L is molybdenum bearing austenitic stainless steel similar to 316, but with higher molybdenum alloy content. It is also known as UNS S31700, and is primarily comprised of 18% to 20% chromium and 11% to 15% nickel.317L offers higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperatures than conventional Stainless Steel. It is a low carbon grade which provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes.

ASTM A276 specification covers hot-finished or cold-finished bars except bars for reforging. It includes rounds, squares, and hexagons, and hot-rolled or extruded shapes, such as Angle, tees, and Angle in the more commonly used types of Stainless Steel.

 This specification includes wrought stainless steel bars, shapes, forgings, and billets or other semi-finished materials, except wire, for forging. The materials are available in four types of conditions.

ASTM B473

  This specification includes nickel alloy bar & wire, which can be produced in a solution-annealed condition, stabilized-annealed condition, or annealed condition. There is limited availability for nickel alloys in structural shapes. Custom orders may be required.

Fabrication Data

Alloy 317L can be easily welded and processed by standard shop fabrication practices.

Cold Forming

The alloy is quite ductile and forms easily. The addition of molybdenum and nitrogen implies more powerful processing equipment may be necessary when compared with the standard 304/304L grades.

Hot Forming

Working temperatures of 1652 – 2102°F (900 – 1150°C) are recommended for hot working processes. Do not work this alloy below 1742°F (950°C). If the final forming temperature falls below this threshold, a solution anneal of 1976 – 2156°F (1080 – 1180°C) is necessary. Rapid quenching is required.

Machining

The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 317L makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel. The table below provides relevant machining data.

Corrosion Resistance

317L has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of chemicals, especially in acidic chloride environments such as those encountered in pulp and paper mills. Increased levels of chromium, nickel and molybdenum compared to 316L stainless steel improve resistance to chloride pitting and general corrosion. Resistance increases with molybdenum alloy content. 317L is resistant to sulfuric acid concentrations up to 5 percent at temperatures as high as 120°F (49°C). At temperatures under 100°F (38°C) this alloy has excellent resistance to solutions of higher concentration. However, service tests are recommended to account for the affects of specific operating conditions that may affect corrosion behavior. In processes where condensation of sulfur-bearing gases occurs, 317L is much more resistant to attack at the point of condensation than conventional alloy 316. The acid concentration has a marked influence on the rate of attack in such environments and should be carefully determined by service tests.
