• Austenitic stainless steels are extensively used for service down to as low as liquid helium temperature (-269 deg C). This is largely due to the lack of a clearly defined transition from ductile to brittle fracture in impact toughness testing.
• Various types of stainless steel are used across the whole temperature range from ambient to 1100 deg C.
• The ferritic types may be limited, in practice, to lower temperatures as they have lower strengths at elevated temperatures than the austenitic types. The ferritic types can also suffer from embrittlement with extended exposure to temperatures above about 450°C.

Alloy 431 is the basic, general purpose martensitic stainless steel that is used for highly stressed parts and provides good corrosion resistance plus high strength and hardness. Alloy 431 contains a minimum of 11.5% chromium which is just sufficient enough to demonstrate corrosion resistance properties in mild atmospheres, steam, and many mild chemical environments. It is a general purpose grade that is often supplied in the hardened but still machineable condition for applications where high strength and moderate heat and corrosion resistance are required. Alloy 431 displays maximum corrosion resistance when it’s been hardened, tempered, and then polished.

Corrosion Resistance:

• Good corrosion resistance to atmospheric corrosion, potable water, and to mildly corrosive environments
• Its exposure to everyday activities (sports, food preparation) is generally satisfactory when proper cleaning is performed after exposure to use
• Good corrosion resistance to low concentrations of mild organic and mineral acids

Welding Characteristics

• Readily welded by all standard methods
• To reduce the risk of cracking, it is suggested to pre-heat the work piece to 350 to 400oF (177 to 204oc)
• Post weld annealing is recommended to retain maximum ductility

Heat Treatment

 

• Annealing: Heat to 1200/1250ºF (650/675ºC), soak and air cool. This treatment is best for most machining operations.

  
  

  Harden: Heat to 1800/1950ºF (980/1065ºC) – soak and oil quench or air cool. If tempering below 700ºF (370ºC) use the high side of the austenitizing temperature for the best toughness, and similarly the low side of the austenitizing temperature when tempering above 1100ºF (540ºC) for best toughness.

  
  

  Temper: at a temperature to give desired mechanical properties. Soak at least one hour – longer for large parts – and air cool. Temper between 700/1050ºF (370/565ºC): lower toughness and corrosion resistance may obtain outside this temperature range, but depending upon other required properties it may still be necessary to forsake some toughness and corrosion resistance. Experience will be the guide here

  
  

  Machinability: The alloy shows fairly good machinability, but there will be some gall and build up on the cutting edge of the tools.

  
  

  WeldabilityThe base metal should be preheated to 400/600ºF (205/315ºC) and the temperature maintained at 400ºF (205ºC) during welding. A post-weld treatment at 1200ºF (650ºC) should be carried out on the weldment as soon as possible after cooling to room temperature.
